A Little History of Shrimp Pie

Shrimp pie has roots in Southern coastal cuisine, especially in Florida and Louisiana, where fresh shrimp is abundant. Historically, seafood pies were a way to combine simple pantry ingredients with the day’s catch. Florida’s version leans toward creamy, cheesy fillings inside a buttery crust—reflecting the state’s mix of Southern comfort food and coastal flavors. Over time, this dish has become a beloved family recipe, often served at potlucks, holidays, and gatherings.

Each slice brings a delicious balance of buttery crust and cheesy seafood goodness, making it a standout dish that feels both homestyle and gourmet.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined

  • 1 pre-made pie crust (9-inch)

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten

  • 1 tbsp butter

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

  • Blind-bake the pie crust for 10 minutes until lightly golden. Remove and set aside.

  • In a skillet, melt butter and sauté garlic for 1 minute. Add shrimp, season with salt and pepper, and cook until just pink. Remove from heat.

  • In a bowl, whisk together cream, eggs, and cheddar cheese.

  • Arrange shrimp evenly inside pie crust. Pour cream mixture over shrimp.

  • Bake 25–30 minutes until filling is set and top is golden.

  • Garnish with fresh parsley before serving.

Notes

Use Monterey Jack or Gruyère for a different cheese flavor.

Add spinach, mushrooms, or peppers for extra veggies.

Fresh-caught shrimp gives the best flavor, but frozen works too.

FAQ – Common Questions

1. Can I use frozen shrimp for this recipe?
Yes! Just thaw completely and pat dry before cooking to avoid excess moisture in the pie.

2. What type of pie crust works best?
A pre-made buttery crust is convenient, but homemade crust adds extra flavor. Puff pastry can also be used for a flakier texture.

3. Can I make this ahead of time?
Absolutely! Prepare the pie, cover, and refrigerate before baking. When ready, bake as directed, adding 5–10 extra minutes to ensure it’s heated through.
